Muscle of the week – Levator Scapulae

Levator Scapulae is located on the posterior lateral portion of the neck. Its main function is to lift the scapula (shoulder blade)

It originates from the posterior tubercle of the transverse processes of C1-C4. It is inserted into the medial border of the scapula.

When the spine is fixed Levator Scapulae elevates and medially rotates the inferior angle of the Scapula.

When the shoulder is fixed, Levator Scapulae rotates and flexes the cervical spine laterally.

The Levator Scapulae is supplied by two or three branches of the fourth and fifth C Vertebrae and frequently by a branch from the Dorsal Scapulae.

Below is a stretch to target the Levator Scapulae.

Place one hand behind your Glutes to lower your shoulder.
Turn your head to the opposite side and look down.
Gently pull down on your head with the other hand and maintain the position when you feel a stretching sensation. Repeat.
