Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis

Diagnosis
Plantar Fasciitis is a disorder that results in pain under the arch of the foot or on the heel. It’s as a result of a thickening to the connective tissue running under the foot. This can be caused by a build up of smaller problems over a prolonged period or by recent damage or injury. It can be very painful especially when pressure is applied to the area.

Prevention
Plantar Fasciitis can be caused by a tightness of the calf muscle and Achilles tendon. This creates a pulling effect around the heel and under the arch increasing the likelihood of inflammation. Losing weight can help the problem. Wearing shoes that are worn out or inflexible can be a potential cause.
Treatment
The trouble with treatment of plantar fasciitis is it is very hard to imobilize it and give it chance to rest. Staying well hydrated has a positive affect.
In the acute phase of the injury (the first 48 hours) ice the foot for 10 minutes 3 times daily to reduce the inflammation.
After the inflammation has reduced a good exercise to build up some strength and flexibility is to place a tea towel flat on the floor with your foot above the towel pick up and crumple up the towel using only your toes. This action will help to strengthen the arch of the foot.
